The TV Magic Behind Hockey Night in Canada

Here's a great story from inside the HNIC trailer at a recent Habs game by Graeme Hamilton of the National Post.

Achoo! Oink. UhOh.

We are going to hear a lot more about Swine Flu. Here's the basics from Angela Mulholland at CTV.ca News.

What If You Could Move Objects With Your Mind?

"Coming this fall to a store near you. They are the first "brain-computer interfaces" to enter the consumer mainstream. Toys, but so much more. They embody a dream of the ages: controlling the world with your thoughts. Telekinesis. The stuff of the gods" But will it bring me a beer?

Verner Vinge and The Singularity (the what?)

"In a 1993 essay, “The Coming Technological Singularity,” Vinge made his vision clear, writing that “within thirty years, we will have the technological means to create superhuman intelligence. Shortly after, the human era will be ended.” Scary prediction? Crazy talk? Or is he on to something good? You decide.

Chrysler Bankrupt? Pontiac Dead?

It's the carpocalypse. The New York Times is reporting that the US Government will drive Chrysler into bankruptcy as early as next week. And CNN is reporting that GM (now often known as Government Motors) will kill off the famous Pontiac brand. My father drove Pontiacs for decades. I learned to drive on his '62, almost identical to this one over at the Old Car Manual Project. Well I thought it looked like that. And it did. Sort of.

Speaking of Old Cars...

If you love old cars as much as I do, then block out a chunk of your weekend to go here. This is probably the best virtual car show on the planet. Just keep scrolling. Enjoy!

Time Lapse - Los Angeles to New York City

This is one of the most awesome time-lapse videos I've ever seen. I believe the convertible is an early 1960s Ford. The music may not be to your taste, so mute it and play your favorite driving tune instead.

EARTH ON THE BRAIN

"Among researchers who analyze environmental data, a lot has changed since the 1970s." Here's more thoughts on Earth Day, and the future of environmentalism in general from John Tierny of the New York Times.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HUBBLE!

The fabulous Hubble Space Telescope is 19 years old today. Here are some more amazing space pix via Gizmodo.

SENSATIONAL NEW IMAGES FROM SATURN

‘We're looking at a string of remarkable discoveries - about Saturn's magnificent rings, its amazing moons, its dynamic magnetosphere and about Titan's surface and atmosphere,’ said Dr. Linda Spilker, deputy project scientist.

EARTH DAY - BETTER LATE THAN NEVER

So the 39th annual Earth Day was two days ago. Somehow it didn't get the same hype as Turn Out The Lights And Freeze In The Dark Day did a few weeks back. Maybe that's because everything we were told in 1970 about the coming enviro-pocalypse was completely dead wrong. Here's a flashback to a catalog of predicted eco-calamities that didn't happen as of the year 2000. And gee ya know they still haven't happened. Kind of makes you wonder about the stuff we are being told today, no?

SO THE BRUINS RULE...

For now. Funny anyway.

A WEARABLE MOTORCYCLE?

Some people won't get this. Too bad for them!

MUSIC STUDENT: HOW DO I GET TO CARNEGIE HALL?

Music Professor: Practise, Practise, Practise! That's how some St. John's kids did it. “Adjudicator Joseph Modica was so moved that he commented ‘If you’re committed to other aspects of your life like you’re committed to what you did here today, then our world is in good shape.’

But will they be able to go?
